How to Know if Your Marble Floor Needs Polishing

The shine of a marble floor fades gradually: a little each day, until one day you notice the floor no longer gleams. In this article we explain the signs that your floor needs polishing, what you can do yourself, and when to call a specialist.

Sign 1: The shine stays dull even after cleaning

If the floor remains dull and lifeless after mopping, the problem is not dirt but the stone surface itself. Years of foot traffic, fine grains of sand and general wear create micro-scratches that scatter light. A mirror shine comes from a perfectly smooth stone surface — and once that smoothness is lost, no cleaning product will bring it back.

Sign 2: Dull spots — acid etch marks

A drop of lemon juice, a splash of wine, or mopping with vinegar: marble is a calcareous stone, and acids literally burn its surface, leaving dull, sometimes slightly recessed marks. These spots cannot be cleaned away because they are damage in the stone, not dirt on the stone. The only solution is local or full polishing.

Sign 3: Visible scratches and “walking paths”

Look at the floor in low side light: do you see duller “trails” where people walk most? Those are wear zones. Scratches from furniture legs, pet claws and worn semicircles under doors also show that the top layer of the stone is already damaged.

Sign 4: The floor gets dirty quickly

The closed, smooth surface of polished marble gives dirt nothing to grip. As the surface wears, micro-pores open up and dirt settles in: the floor gets dirty faster and is harder to clean. If you find yourself mopping more and more often — that is a sign of wear.

Sign 5: The sealer no longer works

A simple test: leave a few drops of water on the floor. If the water beads up — the protection still works. If the water soaks in and the stone darkens — the protective layer is exhausted and the stone is vulnerable to staining.

What you can do yourself

• Clean correctly: only pH-neutral products — never vinegar, citric acid or chlorine.
• Dry after mopping: wipe with microfibre to avoid limescale marks.
• Fight the sand: a doormat and regular vacuuming — sand is marble’s enemy number one.
